About The Neighborhood Crime Index

The Crime Index indicates how prevalent criminal activity is in a neighborhood.

The crime index is calculated based on the incidence of major felony crimes (murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny, auto larceny) that occur in a neighborhood. More weight is given to serious violent crimes (murder, rape, robbery & assault) than to property crimes.

The relative safety of a neighborhood is indicated by a numerical score as well as a color

Lower scores indicate neighborhood that are safer

Green: Safest 20% of Neighborhoods

Gray: Neighborhoods with average levels of crime

Orange: Neighborhoods with crime incidents higher than 60% to 80% of neighborhoods

Red: Neighborhoods with crime incidents higher than 80% of neighborhoods

% of Young Professionals

Percent of Neighborhood Population That Is Between 22 and 39 Years of Age

Why Is this Relevant? The majority of people who moving to New York tend to be in their 20s and 30s. By identifying neighborhood that have a larger proportion of people in their 20s and 30s, you will be able to get an idea of how popular a given neighborhood is with recent transplants

Lower scores indicate neighborhoods which are situated closer to important NYC locations and have better access to different parts of the city

Neighborhoods with higher scores tend to be less ideally situated

A neighborhoods commutability index score is derived from sum of subway commute times to the Chamber Street, Columbus Circle, Union Square, Grand Central and Time Square stations. These are 5 of NYC's busiest subway stations and are common stops for many New Yorkers during their daily commute.
